For a Dear Friend Who Passed Away

March 9, 2025 - USA

Dr. Huỳnh Văn Chỉnh, a Vietnamese Marine Corps physician from the former Republic of Vietnam (RVN), and I forged a bond through our shared experiences and struggles for freedom. During the war, we joined the RVN armed forces to protect our land and the people of South Vietnam. We stayed until the bitter end, witnessing the fall of our homeland on April 30, 1975. Our journey continued as we crossed the South China Sea, without fear, by boat in 1979, fleeing to safer lands with our families.

During our time at the Galang refugee camp in Indonesia, we forged an unbreakable bond while working side by side, transporting tree trunks to construct barracks for our fellow Vietnamese boat people. This shared experience not only strengthened our camaraderie but also marked the beginning of our journey to the "promised land," the United States, where we sought a fresh start. I cherish the memories we have created together, especially our last dinner on April 30, 2023, in Westminster, CA.

Brother Chỉnh will forever hold a special place in our hearts as an extraordinary soldier, a hero, a devoted medical doctor, and a gifted singer. Your remarkable spirit continues to inspire millions of Vietnamese people, including my family, creating a bond that withstands the test of time, destined to endure for a thousand years and more. Your legacy is a beacon of hope and strength, reminding us of the profound impact one person can have on the lives of others.

I cherish every moment we spent together and will carry your memory, ensuring that your essence never fades from the world. As William Wallace profoundly said, “Every man dies... not every man really lives...” You have truly lived, and your life will remain a source of inspiration and courage for generations to come, proving that love and dedication can leave an everlasting imprint on the hearts of many.
